As we get closer and closer to the NFL season, more key roster decisions need to be made from every NFL team. In the case of the Patriots, one of biggest decisions for them will be to either start the 9 year veteran Jacoby Brissett or the number three overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft: Drake Maye.
Brissett is coming off last year where he only saw limited action for the Washington Commanders, throwing for 224 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions. He signed a 1 year 8 million dollar deal this past offseason with Patriots. The Patriots make this team number 6 for Brissett who can bring a veteran presence as Quarterback one and can really help teach the young rookie Maye a lot of great things as he continues to develop.
Maye, who was seen as a high upside pick at number 3, definitely has shown flashes in the first two games of preseason of why he had so much hype coming out of North Carolina. This included a touchdown drive in the Patriots second game against the Philadelphia Eagles, which culminated in a rushing touchdown for the young quarterback which was the first of many in his young career.
Head Coach Jerrod Mayo has yet to rule out either quarterback going into week 1. He talked about all the good things he saw from Maye and how he hopes it’s a just a “upward trajectory from here” for the QB. He also pointed out the next preseason game for the team against the Washington Commander’s, which will be more of a chance to evaluate and come to a decision.
