What’s Next for the New Orleans Saints After a Disappointing 2024-25 Season?

The New Orleans Saints find themselves at a critical juncture following another underwhelming season that leaves fans and analysts questioning the team's direction. With interim head coach Darren Rizzi stepping in mid-season after Dennis Allen's firing, the franchise must now consider sweeping changes to return to contention.

Coaching Search Underway

One of the most immediate questions for the Saints is the head coaching vacancy. Darren Rizzi, known for his success as a special teams coordinator, could earn a chance to lead the team full-time. However, more prominent names such as Ben Johnson, offensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions, or Brian Flores, Minnesota’s defensive coordinator, could be in play. A return for Sean Payton, though highly unlikely, has been speculated due to his history with the team.

Roster Recalibration

The Saints have foundational pieces but also glaring weaknesses. Derek Carr, who showed late-season improvement with a 14-2 touchdown-to-interception ratio, could still be the quarterback for the future if supported by a more robust offensive line. However, major questions remain about the durability and performance of key linemen like Trevor Penning and Ryan Ramczyk, with the latter potentially nearing medical retirement due to a chronic knee issue.

Wide receiver Chris Olave continues to shine, coming off back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons. He and playmaker Rashid Shaheed are critical assets moving forward. However, age is catching up to defensive stalwarts like Cameron Jordan, Demario Davis, and Tyrann Mathieu, all in their mid-30s. Meanwhile, the Saints’ pass rush, which ranked among the NFL’s worst in 2024, needs significant reinforcements despite the addition of Chase Young, who had a solid season with 7.5 sacks.

Possible Trades and Free Agency

To create cap flexibility, New Orleans may explore trading aging stars or restructuring contracts. Alvin Kamara’s future could also come into focus, as the Saints might look to extract value from him via trade if they shift toward a rebuild. On the other hand, finding another edge rusher or bolstering the offensive line should top their free-agent priorities.

Draft Strategy and Development

The Saints hold valuable draft capital, including first- and second-round picks, which could help fill their roster holes. Drafting a young offensive lineman or cornerback may be critical, especially with their aggressive press-man defensive style requiring elite athleticism. Alabama cornerback Kool-Aid McKinstry, a recent pick, and other young players like Isaiah Foskey must continue to develop.

A Balancing Act

The Saints face a choice between retooling for one last push with their veteran core or embracing a rebuild. A new coaching hire will likely set the tone for this decision. Either way, New Orleans must address its inability to stop the run or pressure the quarterback consistently—issues that have plagued them for multiple seasons. A top-10 scoring defense in 2024 masked underlying flaws that must be corrected.

With fan expectations high and division rivals Tampa Bay and Atlanta trending upward, the Saints' offseason moves will be critical to avoid further regression in the NFC South.
