Should John Cena Be The Who Dethrones Cody Rhodes?

John Cena has seemingly done it all in the professional wrestling business. He’s a 16-time WWE champion. That stat alone isn’t common in any wrestling company ever. With that record, he’s currently tied with Ric Flair with the most reigns of all time. Though that’s Cena’s biggest record, there’s even more that he has accomplished that makes him a glorified WWE hall of famer. John Cena is a two-time Royal Rumble winner, five-time WWE United States Champion, four-time WWE Tag Team Champion, a Money in the Bank winner as well and a five-time Match of the Year winner with countless WWE superstars that defined Cena’s career.

Even with all of the success that Cena collected within his legendary career, there’s two more stats that the fans want to see before his ultimate retirement in 2025. Cena has yet to win the Intercontinental Championship to make him a Grand Slam Champion/Winner (winning every championship in the company) putting in the same conversation with Edge, Daniel Bryan, The Big Show, Eddie Guerrero, Randy Orton, The Miz, Kurt Angle, Chris Jericho, Dean Ambrose and Roman Reigns as the only WWE superstars ever to hold that accomplishment.

As much as some fans want nostalgia with Cena facing off against old rivals, there’s a high chance that we may see him taking on some of the younger talent of the company. Whether it’s Grayson Waller, Carmelo Hayes and even Bron Breakker, who is currently the Intercontinental Champion. That is a dream match happening and has to go down during the retirement tour at some point.

Although being tied with Ric Flair is an amazing stat line, there is a section of fans that would love to see John Cena become a 17-time WWE Champion and break the record. Whether it’s at the Royal Rumble event, WrestleMania, or even Summerslam, those fans believe that this retirement tour can not end with Cena not capturing a world title. A Gunther match would be perfect. Another opportunity for us wrestling watchers to witness Cena take on the future of this company in a high profile match for the World Heavyweight Championship.

Yet, possibly Cena may want a shot at the WWE Championship. The man that currently holds that title is none other than, “The American Nightmare,” Cody Rhodes. A match between Cena and Rhodes has to happen too. On many occasions, Rhodes has credited Cena for the advice and guidance that he gave to him along his professional wrestling journey. So this match is a must but what if Cena defeats Rhodes?

Imagine the pop and massive ovation that Cena gets if he was the one who dethroned Rhodes. Throughout Cody Rhodes’ WWE title reign, he has elevated the company to bigger heights and made an even bigger name for himself, carrying the company on his back. The matches with AJ Styles, Logan Paul, Solo Sikoa and now with Kevin Owens have all been master classes but the story that could be told for John Cena on his retirement tour to defeat Rhodes would be a story for the ages. The match itself will be simply amazing in itself. It’ll allow Cena to leave out of Vegas as a 17-time WWE champion and have the storybook ending to his illustrious career.
