Red River Showdown Preview

This week in college football, we see several high-marquee games taking place this weekend. Ohio State is traveling to Eugene to take on Oregon. There's a huge matchup in the Big 12, with Colorado taking on Kansas State. To close it all out, LSU is facing Auburn. This weekend's slate of games has the potential to go down in history, especially with all eyes being on Texas vs Oklahoma in the Red River Showdown.

The Red River showdown is one of college football's most historic rivalries, with Texas playing Oklahoma at the Texas State Fair in Dallas. Having played at the Cotton Bowl since the 1930s, this Saturday’s edition looks to be another classic as both teams are ranked for the second year in a row. Texas is coming into this game as the #1 ranked team in the nation and will be boosted by the return of starting quarterback Quinn Ewers. Ewers missed the last two games due to an Oblique strain injury. While Ewers was out, the nation got to see backup quarterback Arch Manning lead the offense, as Manning was the top quarterback prospect in the class of 2023. Manning went 2-0 as the starter feeling in for Ewers. Though Manning showed lots of promise, Texas is glad to have Ewers back for their biggest game of the season.

On the other hand, Oklahoma still has some questions about its quarterback position heading into this week’s big matchup with the Longhorns. Michael Hawkins will be making his second start of the season, having replaced Jackson Arnold, a highly recruited prospect out of the class of 2023. Arnold was benched in favor of Hawkins after the Sooners' offense struggled during the first few weeks of the season.  In his lone start for the Sooners, Hawkins threw for 161 yards while also adding 69 yards rushing and a rushing touchdown in a 27-21 comeback win vs Auburn. Hawkins is set to make his first in this Historic matchup, while Ewers will compete in his third Red River Showdown game.

Both teams head into this matchup ranked coming off their by week as Oklahoma moved to #18 in this week’s polls while Texas moved back up to #1 after Alabama upset lost to Vanderbilt this past weekend. Last year the Sooners won a nail-biter in Dallas, winning 34-30 after a last-second touchdown to defeat the Longhorns. Still, with questions surrounding their offense, I can’t see the Sooners repeating last year's performance. I see Texas beating the Sooners to set up a huge matchup with Georgia visiting Austin.
