NFL Week 1 Takeaways

Week 1 started this past Thursday with the Baltimore Ravens at the Kansas City Chiefs. To nobody's surprise the Chiefs won this game and Lamar is now 1-4 against the Chiefs. This game did come down to the wire and Lamar missed some throws to tie the game. My biggest takeaway is the tight ends of the game. The superstars Kelce and Andrews did not perform up to expectations. They both had a combined 5 catches and a total of 48 yards. I’m sure Kelce will be better through the season, but I am not sure about Andrews. Likely the tight end 2 outplayed Andrews significantly. Likely had 9 receptions for 111 yards and a touchdown. It seems Andrew’s backup will be playing a bigger role on the team and Andrew’s production will go down. Andrews did go down with an injury last season resulting in Lamar and Likely building more chemistry.

The only upset this week was the Patriots beating the Bengals in Cincinnati. They won 16-10 in a game where they mostly ran the ball. No receiver had over 31 yards this game. I don’t think this should be a big worry for the Bengals however, it's only week 1 and they were without their wide receiver 2 in Tee Higgins. The Bengals defense had no pressure with 0 sacks and couldn't stop the run. I expect the offense to improve, but this could be an early sign for this defense.

The Week 1 quarterback rookie debuts were definitely a little disappointing. Out of the bunch Jayden Daniels had the best performance. The Washington Commanders wound up losing to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but Daniels wasn't the main problem. The defense is not good and Baker Mayfield was able to throw for 4 touchdowns and score 37 points. Daniels ran it a lot with an impressive 88 yards and two touchdowns. He looked effective through the ground but not the air. He had a higher passing percentage and threw for 184 yards, but the ball wasn't going very far. Most of his throws were just checkdowns, the two leading receivers were both running back for Daniels. Daniels only completed 7 passes to his wide receivers.

Caleb Williams was the only rookie quarterback to win this week. The Bears offense looked bad however, they never scored a touchdown and just weren't able to move the ball all that much. The positive is that the offense never turned the ball over. The Bears defense was amazing. They had two interceptions, one going for 6, they had one fumble recovery, and even had a blocked punt return for a touchdown. This was a very embarrassing performance by Will Levis. They were up 17-3 in the third quarter, they could have punted every time they got the ball and they still would have won. Too many turnovers ruined the Titans in Chicago. Overall Williams still has some things to work and the offense looked rusty with receivers also dropping the ball. I’m sure as the season goes on the offense will get better.

Lastly, Bo Nix had a pretty bad game against the Seahawks. Nix went 26/42 passing with only 138 yards. With 42 attempts no quarterback should only have 138 yards. Nix’s yards per attempt would be 3.2. Nix also didn't have any touchdowns and threw 2 interceptions. He will have better games, it was only his first. Also, the Seahakws have a very talented secondary making it difficult for the rookie.
