Is Fields the Guy?

After concluding week three there are only five undefeated teams heading into week four, the Pittsburgh Steelers are one of them. The Steelers had a very interesting offseason dealing away their first round quarterback Kenny Pickett, to the Philadelphia Eagles. This opened up the quarterback room where they signed Rusell Wilson after he got cut by the Denver Broncos. The Steelers also traded for the Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields. At the end of the preseason Wilson was named the starter, but due to a calf injury Fields got the start in week 1. Since then the Steelers have not lost a game and it starts the question, is Fields the guy?

Fields' time in Chicago didn’t work, and he can be blamed on himself and also the organization. Fields never had a talented team around him, to help the young quarterback develop. The offensive line was always weak and it wasn't till his last season where the Bears traded for a true number one in D.J. Moore. In the three seasons Fields was in Chicago he never threw for more than 2,500 yards or 17 pass touchdowns in a season. Fields performed  below average and it was enough for them to draft Caleb Williams to replace him. It was a shame because the Bears traded up and drafted Fields in the first round. Fields always had a ton of potential; he had an elite arm and elite speed. It’s hard to say who was at fault, the Bears did not give him a fair shot, but he also did not perform in his first three years.

Through the first three weeks Fields isn't lighting up with his stats. The passing yards are still very low as well as his pass touchdowns, and he isn't running the ball all that much either. While the yardage hasn't changed, Fields has been more efficient. Fields is completing more passes and is turning over the ball less, giving a better quarterback rating. While stats are one thing and it looks that Fields is doing better, with the overall team success. Field's time with the Bears resulted in an 8-28 record, there wasn't much of any success in Chicago, but now in Pittsburgh Fields is 3-0. While the sample size is still small I believe Field's future will be the Steelers.

While the counting numbers for Fields are not great, it simply just doesn't matter. The Steelers are winning games, and Fields has been a better passer of the football. It will be interesting to see what the Steelers do when Wilson is healthy. Over the years Wilson has proved he is a better starter than Fields, even his last year in Denver was significantly better than any year Fields has had. If the Steelers continue to win I’m not exactly sure if Wilson will ever see the field though. We could see a potential trade with Wilson as we have already seen a few injuries to quarterbacks around the league. So far the Steelrs have played the Falcons, Broncos, and Chargers. They have allowed a total of 26 points combined. When a defense is allowing less than 10 points a game it’s absolutely insane, but there is no way they can continue that for the rest of the season. Yes, the Steelrs have an elite defense but allowing less than ten points is unsustainable. The only argument I can make against Fields is if they play a really good offense, can the Steelers still make it competitive? If the defense does not perform, can Fields take the next step? According to Steelers Super Bowl winning quarterback Ben Roethlisberger he can. He has said publicly that he would choose Fields over Wilson.
