Cody Rhodes has had a WWE championship reign of a lifetime. While being a defending champion has always been his priority, having the respect amongst his peers and carrying the company is number one for “The American Nightmare,” and this past Saturday night proved it once more that he’s the man for the job. In the main event of WWE’s last PLE of 2024, Saturday Night’s Main Event, the WWE universe witnessed yet another sweet victory for Rhodes as he defeated Kevin Owens to retain his title.
During the first half of this feud between Owens and Rhodes, it’s been about respect. Rhodes simply gave Owens an opportunity as a token of his appreciation to have a match for the championship due to the amount of help and assistance that Owens has been for Rhodes throughout the constant run-ins with the Bloodline. Owens hesitantly agreed and feared that the match would get in the way of their friendship. At the Bash in Berlin event on August 31, 2024, we saw Rhodes and Owens go to war with Rhodes ultimately on top with the win. As any fan would have thought, this was going to be a one off match but Owens thought differently. Internal thoughts and feelings towards Cody would boil over for Owens sooner than later.
Owens would then attack both Randy Orton and Cody Rhodes for their actions as of late. Owens turned his back against Rhodes because of teaming up with Roman Reigns at the Bad Blood PLE back in October. After all of the fighting and putting his body on the line for Cody to finish his story, for Cody to team with Reigns after the fact rubbed Owens the wrong way and that caused the actions for Kevin. The same fate came to Orton as well for understanding and being by Rhodes’ side. A piledriver has put the 14-time WWE champion out of action since November 8th.
In honor for his former leader of “Legacy” and close friend, Rhodes agreed to have yet another match with Owens, but this time it’s personal. After multiple back and forths and cheap shots, the match was set for Saturday Night’s Main Event for the WWE Championship. Even with the win, Cody Rhodes was not able to walk out on his own. After the match, still bitter after defeat, Kevin Owen would again take a cheap shot at Cody and ambush him. Another piledriver took out Rhodes to end the night. Owens is on a rampage and from the looks of it, he’s on a very personal mission to hurt any and everyone that’s involved with and helped the Bloodline along the way. Cody Rhodes and Randy Orton were two on his list and it’s only a matter of time who will be next. Owens mentioned Sami Zayn in a backstage promo talking to Michael Cole, that “we’re going to cross that bridge when we get to it” line smells like another opportunity for Owens to get his hands on yet an additional member of Roman Reigns’ Bloodline.
