Arizona Lands Burnes

Corbin Burnes is the last of the big names and was the top pitching option this offseason. Teams have had a bidding war and the Arizona Diamondbacks came out on top. Arizona was definitely a shock in the baseball world as the Diamondbacks were not favorites to land the right handed arm.

For the Arizona Diamondbacks this is an absolute win. Burnes signed a 6 year, 210 million dollar deal breaking franchise history for the Diamondbacks surpassing Grienke’s deal back in 2015. This comes out to a 35 million AAV, which is very fair for one of the best arms in baseball. Compared to the Max Fried signing it almost seems cheap for Burnes. This was a team that just missed out of the playoffs last season even though they had a record of 89-73. The Diamondbacks are unfortunately just in a stacked division with the Dodgers, Padres, and Giants who are true competitors. The Diamondbacks now have one of the best rotations in all of baseball with Burnes, Zac Gallen, Merrill Kelly, Eduardo Rodriguez, Brandon Phaadt, and Jordan Montgomery. I wouldn't be surprised to see one of these arms get dealt before the season starts, Montgomery has already been in plenty of rumors prior to the Burnes signing. I still think Arizona should trade for a bat. Joc Pederson, Christian Walker, and Randal Grichuk all came off the books relieving enough cap to sign Corbin Burnes. While they did trade for Josh Naylor, I’d still like them to make another move. Corbin Burnes will more than likely be a pretty safe move for Arizona. 4 in the last 5 years Burnes has had a sub 3 era, with a 2.92 era last season. Burnes has won a Cy Young award with the Brewers and has great command and really hasn't shown any signs of regression. The one negative I could see with this signing is what does this mean for Zac Gallen. Zac Gallen will be a free agent after the 2025 season and I don’t think Arizona will have the money to re-sign him. Gallen would have been the ace if it wasn't for Burnes so this could be a huge loss, so this season might be a very short window for the Diamondbacks.

For the Orioles this has to be worst case scenario. The Orioles gave up a pretty sizable haul to Milwaukee acquiring Burnes and all they got was one season out of him. Baltimore doesnt have a lot of money tied up in players so it was really surprising to see Burnes leave. Baltimore has a ton of young talent and are definitely on the rise but now after Burnes leaving this sets them back. Especially since they have not done much to replace Burnes. The Orioles recently went out and signed Charlie Morton, Morton is 41 and not coming off of a greatest season. Definitely not a great replacement so I’m curious to see what Baltimore can do before next season starts. They also brought in Tomoyuki Sugano, a right handed arm from Japan. This was also a one year deal and Sugano is 35 years old with no MLB experience. Hopefully one of these older arms can produce for the Baltimore Orioles.
